Coucher de soleil from Visions d’Artistes, 1908 (Gustave Marissiaux)
The first time I sang in Venice, I performed this piece at Saint Mark’s Basilica. The upper of the interior is covered in intricate mosaics of gold, bronze, precious and semi-precious stones; unlike anything I had seen to that point. Singing this piece in that setting was a pivotal aesthetic experience of the most profound and Langer-esque “Formalism” type. There is nothing like singing music composed specifically for a space, but with Gabrieli it is more than that: He was in the forefront of combining the new sciences of acoustics, music theory, and liturgical music of the highest order. Although I have had many meaningful performances in Venice since, this one will always be the one I hold in my heart.
